Deepa Mehta roped in to direct the boldest web series for Netflix

Indo-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta who has been out of the Indie scene for quite some time has been roped in the boldest web series for Netflix.

Deepa Mehta has some prominent critically acclaimed films like Fire, Earth, and Water to her credits.

Fire which had Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das playing the leads was about two woman Sita and Radha, two young Indian women whose husbands choose celibacy or mistresses over their wives. This leads them to form an intimate, passionate relationship amidst a close-minded society.

John Abraham and Lisa Rani Ray starred in the movie Water. The story was that following the sudden and unexpected death of her husband, a widowed child bride lashes out against her fate in the Hindu ashram where she is expected to atone for her sins.

The story was deeply moving as the widowed bride played by Lisa Ray would be sent around the village as she was yet young and beautiful to sleep with rich landlords.

The young widows had to face this as there was no other place for them to stay in the society.

Though nothing has been confirmed officially about the web series on Netflix, certain reports say that the concept of the series is quite bold.

Commenting on the same, a source close to the developments says, “Yes, Deepa Mehta will be directing a series for Netflix, but no details of what exactly the show is based on have been revealed. However, it is suffice to say that this series will be one of the boldest shows ever to be shown on the Indian web world.”

When prodded for further details about the cast of the said show, the source goes on to add, “As of now South actor Siddharth has been brought on board for the project. Apart from him, no other cast details are available yet.”
